Swimmer’s Itch Reported

Swimmers have recently reported swimmer’s itch occurring near the beach area. While not common at Marean Lake, it does occur when conditions are right.  Although uncomfortable, this allergic reaction to parasites in the water is usually short-lived. The parasites that cause swimmer’s itch live in the blood of waterfowl and animals that live in or near the lake.

Here are some things that can help:

  • Dry off thoroughly after leaving the water with a brisk toweling to dislodge any parasites on your skin.
  • Coat your body prior to swimming with sun block, repellent, or anything that waterproofs the skin.
  • Shower shortly after swimming using a body wash.
  • Refrain from feeding the ducks and geese, they could be carriers of this parasite and the more they hang around the more likely the area will be affected.
  • Consult your physician if the condition becomes severe.
